During the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”, China's petrochemical and chemical industries made great strides in their strategic development, but certain structural barriers are still evident. For example, traditional products face the problem of overcapacity, industry innovation continues to be inadequate and industrial specialization is not yet fully developed.
The “Thirteenth Five Year” Plan sets out the goal of improving the quality and efficiency of chemical companies and their products, including agricultural chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides. It also includes high performance plastics, fluorosilicate materials, high performance fibres and functional films, new materials and 3D printed materials.
Germany has a very strong position and is an international player in the chemical industry. In 2015, spending on research and development of German companies rose by 9.5% year on year to a record 62.4 billion euros. Spendings by the chemical industry for research and development ranked second with over 10 billion euros, behind the R&D expenditures of the automotive industry of 21.7 billion euros. This ensures the strong and sustainable innovation capabilities of German chemical companies.
